Megan Fox, Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, and Miley Cyrus are beautiful, successful, and famous. Know what else they have in common? They all live paleo lifestyles and attribute it to keeping them slim, trim, energized, and fabulous! But what to do when you don’t have a personal trainer, chef, or time for meal prep? Or maybe you do have all that at your fingertips but want a quick protein fix with no muss or fuss. For me, I’m all about the paleo protein powder that rocks my world!
I often turn to paleo protein powders and smoothies (and sometimes baked treats like muffins and cookies). A scoop mixed with some collagen powder and sometimes fruit – and whatever else I may feel like adding – tastes delicious, keeps me full for hours and is a fabulous way to add protein and fiber to your diet. In this post, I’m sharing some info about all things paleo and paleo protein powders. I’m also highlighting Amy Myers, M.D., the creator of Amy Myers M.D. because it happens to be International Woman’s Day today, and this badass female entrepreneur definitely deserves to be celebrated.
About Paleo Protein Powders
There is a lot to learn if you’re first considering a paleo lifestyle or interested in trying paleo products. I don’t live a paleo lifestyle, but I do love using paleo and keto products. Right off the bat, I’m throwing it out there. Protein powders aren’t for everyone, but if you’re adding healthy supplements into your diet and looking for ways to get your protein in, paleo protein powder is a perfect way to do it. (Remember that above pic on Instagram? Yummy Peppermint Mocha!)
Protein Powder Vs. Real Food
Yes, of course. Real, whole foods are always your best bet, but sometimes you don’t have time to grill a chicken breast or whip up some tuna salad. Even the best meal preppers sometimes find themselves searching through their fridge only to realize they ate that last breast the day before. Also – let’s face it. There’s more to life than chicken breasts, like salted caramel shakes, amiright?!?
And what about a quick brekkie or post-workout mini-meal? Sometimes, a protein shake is a perfect answer. As for me, sometimes I’m not in the mood for a traditional breakfast of eggs or cereal, and I consistently reach for Myers’ protein powder. The ingredients are clean, pure, grass-fed protein, and they work well for me.
Added Benefit of Paleo Protein Powder
Many people turn to a paleo diet to lose weight, and yes, paleo protein powders are helpful when you want to lose fat without losing muscle. A 2008 study on obese individuals found that protein supplements helped in greater fat loss and preserved muscle mass.
And paleo protein doesn’t just help you lose fat; it also helps keep your weight off. One of the best aspects of paleo proteins is limiting hunger and preventing you from gaining more body fat. Researchers have established that this protein reduces hunger, increases your sense of fullness, and maintains weight loss. That sounds like a win-win to me!
So, if you are looking for a way to lose a few pounds, paleo could be for you. As for me, it’s more about a delicious way to get in some quick, healthy protein, and satisfying my tastebuds.
Things to Consider When Purchasing Paleo Protein Powders
· Protein Content Per Serving
When you purchase paleo protein powder, make sure that you look at the nutrition facts, i.e., how much protein will you get per serving?
Often, there are protein powders that offer good protein per serving but come in small serving sizes. Ultimately, such protein powders end up being quite expensive. Therefore, make sure that you look at both the protein per serving and the product’s nutrition facts.
Some protein powders come with sweeteners, such as stevia. Some people don’t mind stevia because it comes from a plant, but others don’t like it as it is still like actual sugar. If you don’t want stevia in your protein powder, make sure that you check the ingredients before purchasing the product.
Whenever you are buying protein powders, make sure that you have a look at the ingredients list. It is best to go for brands that have listed all the ingredients they use – full transparency.
This is the most obvious yet most ignored factor. You must have a look at the product and check whether it is actually a paleo-approved powder or not. Many products are billed as paleo protein powders, but they use whey (dairy) in the ingredients.
While the price is the first thing that many people will look at when purchasing paleo protein powders, it should actually be the last. In the pursuit of low prices, you should never forget quality. If you end up purchasing a poor-quality product that doesn’t even offer you good protein content and other nutrients, it’s actually a waste of money.
Which Ingredients Should You Avoid in Paleo Protein Powders?
BPA or Bisphenol-A is a chemical used to make plastics. It can be toxic to humans as it interferes with hormones and leads to many disorders in the human body. According to a study by the Clean Label Project, 134 ‘famous’ protein powder brands contained 55% BPA in their ingredients. Therefore, make sure that you are using a reputed brand that is BPA-free.
· Heavy Metals
The same study also found that many protein powders contain heavy metals which are toxic to humans. Intake of heavy metals can lead to kidney issues, vomiting, and liver problems. Whenever you are purchasing a protein powder, make sure that you go through the ingredients.
· Artificial Sweeteners and Thickeners
Another ingredient that you need to stay away from is artificial sweeteners like aspartame. Also, make sure that the paleo protein powders are free of thickeners like xanthan gum.
