The Eight Best Drugstore Mascaras for Luscious Lashes

Who doesn’t love having long, fluttery eyelashes that cast light shadows on your soft, rosy cheeks? (Too cheesy?) OK, but did you know the best drugstore mascaras can deliver the same results as the pricey and fancy ones? And, the best drugstore mascaras for luscious lashes are all under ten bucks.

Good news, Lash Princess!

You don’t have to splurge on mascaras to get luscious, thick, and voluminous eyelashes. From waterproof mascaras to volume mascaras, I am here with the ultimate list of mascaras that will take you to lash paradise without a hefty price tag.

Do Drugstore Mascaras Offer the Same Results as the Pricier Ones?

I’ve gotta tell you; I’m one of those gals that wear makeup everyday. Even sitting home during quarantine parked on my couch, I had my makeup on. I may not put on a face-full, but I’ve at least got my mascara and blush on.

And since I wear mascara every day, I go through a lot. That’s why I started hunting out less expensive tubes, and below, I’m sharing my top eight faves.

But Before I Share My Favorite Drugstore Mascaras…

Here’s a little mascara quiz for you. Do you know who invented mascara?

It was actually invented by a French chemist-entrepreneur, Eugène Rimmel, in the 19th century – 1872, to be exact. Rimmel’s first formula consisted of – wait for it – petroleum jelly and coal dust. Yup. Needless to say, we’ve come a long way, baby, but interestingly enough, Rimmel, now owned by Coty Inc., is still in the mascara game.

And now, I’ve kept you waiting long enough, patient peeps. Here’s my list:

1.     Best Drugstore Mascara for Hydrating and Nourishing:

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Waterproof Plumping Mascara (Price: $6.30)

drug store mascara

If you are very fussy about the length of your eyelashes, Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Mascara is just what you’re looking for. The best thing about this mascara is that it doesn’t make your eyelashes look clumpy (hate it when that happens!). It will thicken your lashes and make them look plump and dark.

The color is quite intense and works well on any eyelashes. The brush also works well, but take note – make sure to keep the tube tightly closed, as there have been some complaints that the brush dries up quickly if you don’t.

Overall, this mascara gives a nice ‘plump’ to your lashes, just like fake eyelashes, but without looking fake. Amazing, right?

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Waterproof Plumping Mascara is also the best for brittle and dry eyelashes. It will make them appear fuller and thicker. Tried, tested, and trusted— this mascara is the secret that makeup artists rave about!

2.     Best Drugstore Mascara for Sensitive Eyes:

Maybelline Snapscara Washable Mascara Makeup (Price: $5.94)

drugstore mascara

Maybelline is a huge name in the world of mascaras. And it is rightly so! Maybelline Snapscara Washable Mascara is the go-to mascara for many. It also lives up to its name. It easily comes off with just water. Love the curved wand, too.

This mascara is wax-free. This means that it will come off easily if you wipe your lashes with a wet cotton pad. No need to use any makeup removers. This means less time spent removing makeup and less damage to your natural eyelashes. Your eyelashes will thank you.

3.     Best Drugstore Mascara for Short Lashes:

Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara (Price: $7.97)

mascara for short lashes

If you are someone who wants their lashes to look lots longer, meet your new favorite drugstore mascara.

With its ultra-lengthening formula, you can enjoy long and voluminous eyelashes without the hassle of eyelash extensions. It will give the perfect false lash effect. Furthermore, you can also use this mascara on your brows to make them look fuller. Win-Win!

4.     Best Drugstore Mascara for Lash Definition:

Lash Warrior Mascara (Price: $9.99)

drugstore mascara

Another winner that every lash princess must try…

In just one coat, this mascara will give you the perfect false lash effect. Its formula has a perfect consistency, without being too runny. So, if you hate mascaras that are too thin, Lash Warrior Mascara will be perfect for you.

The brush is also amazing. With the spiked bristles on the mascara brush, you will never get clumpy eyelashes.

5.     Best Drugstore Waterproof Mascara:

Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof Mascara (Price: $4.77)

waterproof mascara

If you feel that your mascara comes off quickly, this waterproof mascara is for you. You can cry a pool of tears with this mascara on, and it won’t smear or run. So, if you want a false lash effect without any smudges, this mascara is the right one for you.

You can remove it best with a waterproof eye makeup remover. Remember not to tug or rub your eyelashes to remove this mascara. It lives up to its name and doesn’t come off – which is why a waterproof eye makeup remover is best! Therefore, this mascara’s only downside is that it is difficult to remove without a proper makeup remover.

The brush is also quite easy to use and goes on smoothly. You can apply the mascara in no time with just a single coat. Say goodbye to multiple mascara coats that end up making your lashes clumpy!

6.     Best Drugstore Mascara for Curled Lashes:

Maybelline Great Lash Curved Brush Mascara (Price: $4.79)

Another lash-star from Maybelline. If you are looking for a mascara that gives length, volume and curl, you can never go wrong with this one.

Great Lash Curved Brush Mascara gives you everything. This drugstore mascara is formulated to give you long, voluminous, curled eyelashes at an unbelievable price, and it’s been the go-to mascara of many makeup artists for years.

Also, say bye-bye to raccoon-eyes every time you remove your mascara. The black pigment will gently wash away without leaving any residue.

7.     Best Drugstore Mascara for No Clumps:

COVERGIRL Clump Crusher Mascara (Price: 6.94)

covergirl

This mascara will give you a flattering but natural look with wispy lashes. This is one of the best beauty products that you need for your lashes. Forget all the oils, balms, and serums in your vanity box.

If you want the best results, remember to scrape off the excess on the mascara brush before applying it to your lashes to avoid flakes and clumps.

This mascara features a double-sided brush that makes it quite easy for you to apply the mascara. All you have to do is place the mascara wand at the base of your eyelashes and sweep the brush through.

Due to its intense black pigment, even one coat is enough. If you want to apply another coat, make sure that the first coat dries up first.

8.     Best Drugstore All-In-One Mascara:

Professional All-in-One Curved Brush Mascara (Price: &4.99)

drugstore mascara

If you don’t like to use 3 separate mascaras and lash curlers for the perfect princess lashes you love, this Professional All-in-One Curved Brush Mascara will be a one-stop solution for you. Many professional makeup artists also use this mascara.

Its curved brush gives your lashes the perfect curl. You won’t have to go with the hassle of using an eyelash curler before applying the mascara. With its dark pigment, it will make your lashes appear dark and voluminous.

This drugstore mascara also comes with straight brushes and waterproof versions.

Before you leave…

eyes

No matter your lash style, mascara is a must to make your eyes look open, awake, wide, and beautiful. And, of course, to give your lashes a long and luscious look.

Once open, a mascara tube expires in 3 months. Therefore, it is best not to splurge on a high-end mascara, especially when you can get the same results with the best drugstore mascaras.

So, there you have it—my top eight favorite inexpensive mascaras, available at drugstores, Walmart, Target, and Ulta, as well as on Amazon. If you wear one of these, let me know, and if you wear something else, tell me your favorite inexpensive mascara.

I find myself splurging on expensive mascaras from time to time. But you can always find several of your drug store choices in my vanity. They work well…so splurge?

    Hi Gwen
This was fun to read. I still like Maybelline and Covergirl mascaras! I have long lashes to start, and these work well. I used to get DIORshow and realized it wasnt doing much more than the drugstore brands.
    Have a great day!

I used to use department store mascara but it did get dried out too soon. I’ve switched to drug store brands and found that throwing them away after three months for a fresh tube didn’t rattle my nerves. I use a few of the ones you named and found they all work very well.

Kudos to you for not skipping your make up during covid!
