Should You Even Drink Keto Tequila Cocktails if You’re Dieting?
Keto Cocktails and Calories

Duh!!! That’s a big yes, and the reason for this post. But, I’m not going to go into a whole explanation here – that’s another post in itself, but the happy answer is yes! Absolutely! Keto is all about counting carbs, and alcohol – most of it – doesn’t contain a single carb. We’re talking tequila, vodka, rum, whiskey, and gin – and even vermouth (hello martini). These six easy keto tequila cocktails fit in perfectly to the mix, and that’s reason enough to have a post dedicated to tequila cocktails!
Alcohol still contains calories, though, so I wouldn’t go overboard, whether the cocktails are keto or not. Ok – let’s get to the good stuff – tequila and the brand I choose for all of my tequila cocktails, as well as when I drink tequila on the rocks.
The Perfect Tequila for Keto Tequila Cocktails – and any Tequila Cocktails!
A perfect keto tequila cocktail can’t be complete without the essential ingredient – tequila! With so many out there from which to choose, how do you know which one is the right one? Well, look no further. I was lucky enough to discover Espanita Tequila and its family of artisanal ultra-premium tequilas when I was working on a post for Instagram, and I immediately became a huge fan.
And Here’s Some Exciting Espanita Tequila News to Share
Guess who else loves Espanita? None other than legendary music icon Pitbull! Yes! Pitbull (Armando Christian Perez) recently partnered with Espanita Tequila as the brand’s strategic advisor and Global Brand Ambassador. Pretty cool, right? This Grammy-winning international superstar knows good tequila, and if it’s good enough for Pitbull, well, you know.
Espanita offers three tequilas – Blanco, Reposada, and Anejo, and each one has received excellent reviews, with good reason.

Espanita Blanca is ideal for a Margarita, Bloody Maria, and a variety of other drinks. Most importantly, It’s also good served on the rocks, neat, so if you don’t have anything but a cocktail glass and some ice, pour and enjoy! On its website, Espanita refers to Blanca as the purest expression of the Highland’s Blue Agave.
The Reposada works exceptionally well in margaritas also. You can think of the Reposada as the perfect combination of roasted agave and wood-derived flavors. Still, if you’re looking to make a Tequila Sunrise (yup – a Keto Tequila Sunrise!) or a Mojito or Mexican Mule, this is your tequila.
The third in the line, the Anejo, is aged to perfection in ex-bourbon barrels for 18 months and is delicious served up neat, or in a Tequila Old Fashioned or a Tequila Manhattan. How about a Tequila Martini? Don’t forget – we are making low carb/keto versions of these. Yes, please!
All of the following recipes make one serving, so these measurements are per seving. You can adjust the amount of each ingredient accordingly if you need to make a bigger batch. Espanita Blanco
Tequila Skinny Margarita
A tried and true classic, you can’t go wrong with a margarita. Here’s a recipe I created. I also like using a martini glass for my margarita, but sometimes I’m in the mood for a rocks glass. My surprise ingredient here is sugar-free Tang – yes- you read that right, but you can use orange-flavored water, or sparkling water, Crystal Light, or any sugar-free orange-flavored mix you enjoy. I happen to like the sweetness of Tang.
Ingredients
- 2 ounces of Espanita Blanco
- 1 ounce of lime juice (fresh or bottled)
- 2 ounces sugar-free Tang (That’s 2 fluid ounces measured from a 16.9 ounce mixed serving of prepared Tang.)
- 1 tsp orange liquid stevia
- 1 wedge of lime (or slices)
- 5 cups of ice cubes
- sea salt for the glass rim
Instructions:
Combine everything in a cocktail shaker, except for the lime wedges (slices) and sea salt. Shake, shake, shake! After 10-20 seconds, set aside. Pour sea salt into a shallow bowl or plate. Take a lime wedge and run it around the glass rim and then dip it in the sea salt. Pour the margarita into the glass, add the wedge of lime to the edge, and serve.
Bloody Maria
A Bloody Maria is the same as a Bloody Mary, except tequila is used instead of vodka. We like our Bloodies spicy, but you can always alter the ingredients to suit your tastes. My secret ingredient here is the salt we use to rim our glasses – Chef Blair’s Grog-Wood Smoked Sea Salt. Here is my recipe:
Ingredients:
- 2 ounces Espanita Blanco
- 4 ounces organic, unsweetened tomato juice
- 4 drops Worcestershire sauce
- 1/1 tsp white horseradish
- 1/2 ounce lemon juice
- 2 drops hot sauce
- lemon or lime wedges
- a pinch of salt and pepper
- a pinch of celery salt
- your favorite garnishes. We like celery, olives, bacon.
- *option for the rim – Chef Blair’s Grog-Wood Smoked Sea Salt. Exceptional flavor! Use GWEN20 for any of Chef Blair’s exquisite seasonings. (Not an affiliate link.)
Instructions:
Mix the ingredients in a pitcher except for the garnishes and when well chilled, pour into a salt-rimmed glass and add the garnishes.

Espanita Reposada
Tequila Mojito
I love mojitos, and when made with tequila they are especially refreshing! Below are some of my favorite sugar-free sweeteners.
Ingredients:
- 2 ounces Espanita Reposada
- 2 ounces club soda
- juice from one lime
- 1-ounce Swoon Simple Syrup or Nu Natural’s Simple Syrup or powdered erythritol like So Nourished.
- a small handful of mint leaves (4-10 leaves)
- a handful of ice cubes
Directions:
Muddle the mint leaves in your cocktail shaker. Then, juice your lime and add it to the shaker. After that, add the tequila, club soda, and sweetener of your choice, along with the ice cubes. Shake it up, pour, garnish with additional mint leaves and enjoy.
Tequila Sunrise
There’s something about a Tequila Sunrise that transports me to vacation mode. We’ve been choosing to stay at home this summer – thanks COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend we are away. My keto version of a Tequila Sunrise with another surprise ingredient – sugar-free Monin Pomegranate syrup – will have you thinking of fiestas and fun in no time. Moreover, it may help you forget about the Pandemic for five minutes. (The syrup is 7 grams carbs for a full serving, but I use just one teaspoon, making it very keto-friendly.)
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 ounces of Espanita Reposada
- 3 fluid ounces of sugar-free Tang
- 1 tsp sugar-free Monin Pomegranate syrup
- orange slice for garnish (not keto – don’t eat it if you are being strict, but, I eat mine!)
- optional 1/2-1 ounce fresh lime juice
- a handful or more of ice
Directions:
Fill a highball glass with ice (I use these from Crate & Barrel), pour in the sugar-free Tang and the tequila and lime juice, and then slowly add the sugar-free pomegranate syrup down the side of the glass. Wait for the syrup to settle at the bottom. Garnish if you’d like.

Espanita Anejo
Anejo Old Fashioned
Here’s a low cal take on an Old Fashioned. This cocktail is served in a rocks glass with ice. Garnish with the lime wedge.
Ingredients:
- 2 ounces Espanita Anejo
- 1/2 tsp agave simple syrup like Swoon.
- 2 dashes Angostura Aromatic Bitters
- 1 wedge lime for garnish
Directions:
Fill a rocks glass with ice (I use these from Williams Sonoma). Add all of the ingredients to the glass, mix, and garnish with the wedge of lime. Enjoy!
Jalapeno Anejo Martini
Nothing beats a classic martini, but sometimes it’s fun to change things up. My Jalapeno Anejo Martini is sure to please any tequila lover, and of course, it’s keto.
Ingredients:
- 2 ounces Espanita Anejo
- 1-ounce lime juice
- 1/2 ounce sugar-free Tang (or any sugar-free orange drink) (poured from prepared Tang drink)
- 1/4 fluid ounce of Swoon Simple Syrup
- 1 drop liquid orange stevia
- sliced jalapeno peppers
- jalapeno stuffed olives
Directions:
Add all of the ingredients except the jalapeno slices and olives to a shaker filled with ice. Mix until the shaker is icy cold. Here’s the fun part. I throw a couple of jalapenos into the bottom of my glass and then pour in my mixed drink. For an added garnish, I add olives and more jalapeno peppers, and I always use my favorite cocktail toothpicks.

That’s it! I’ve given you six recipes for yummy keto tequila cocktails. Please let me know if you make any of them. Cheers to keto tequila cocktails and the rest of the summer!
