I don’t know about you, but I can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve actually been out on Valentine’s Eve. Sure, yes, when I was in my twenties with no kids, maybe I might have ventured out, but more often than not, home is where I wanted to be. Why deal with busy restaurants, cold food, and harried servers when you can have a romantic Valentine’s date night at home?
And now, as a woman of a certain age (ahem), nothing has changed. I like being home on Valentine’s Eve, pandemic or not. It’s cozy, safe, and romantic – if you make a little effort. And when you’re with the right person, does it really matter where you are?
Date Night at Home Ideas
Sharing with you a short little round-up of some fab ideas I’ve found online to celebrate Valentine’s Day -both during the day and at night, with the one you love during this funky, funky time. And I’ve got some suggestions too if you are solo right now. Been there, done that. A little self-love is always good for the soul. Also, keep in mind, these suggestions are good for date nights all year long, my sweet friends – not just on Valentine’s Day.
(Valentine) Date Night at Home Ideas
Writer for The Oprah Magazine, Brigitt Earley, has 35 suggestions for a date night – or day – with your significant other, and these are all fabulous suggestions – pandemic or not, Valentine’s Day or not. Again, depends on where you are in your life. At this point, hubs and I aren’t going to get couples massages during a pandemic, or go out to a museum (staying safe for grandson Jack!), but, we love the playlist idea, planning a French night, biking, and quite a few other of Brigitt’s suggestions. Nice list, Brigitt! (In my twenties or with no kids to worry about – I’d be at the museum, and take an in-person cooking class – although taking it virtually is perfect for now!)
Cooking at Home? Need Romantic Dinner Ideas? Here Are 10 Date-Night Menus from Food52.com, compiled by Emma Laperruque, that look delicious. Emma’s rounded up some of the tastiest dinners from an impressive selection of chefs, including everything from this vegetarian option – Creamy Lemon Spaghetti with Crunchy Breadcrumbs recipe by Jo Thrasher (easy peasy), to a hearty Steak Au Poivre by Merrill Stubbs that looks to die for. Yum!
I love the idea of taking a virtual cocktail class from the comfort of home or an at-home poetry night. Why not pen something about your feelings for one another right then and there while enjoying cocktails and charcuterie? Lindsay Geller and Alexis Jones include these suggestions and more in a terrific list in Women’s Health. And again, while our new grandparent status during a pandemic has us shying away from some of the suggestions, there are plenty of ideas we can choose from this detailed list.
I’ve been there – alone on Valentine’s Day. Or how about that time I was dumped the day before Valentine’s Day? My boyfriend decided to go back to his ex-wife. Great timing, right? Mr. Sensitivity still sent me flowers. Gee, what a guy!
Am I digressing? The point I’m making is there are plenty of things to do for yourself if you’re alone on Valentine’s Day – whether it’s your choice or not, and yes, one idea is to spoil yourself in a bubble bath and do the home spa thing. Why not? You deserve it!
When you’re done with your pampering, here are some other fabulous suggestions for a solo Valentine’s Day. Pop Sugar’s Nicole Yi has put together some lovely ideas, such as buying some of your favorite magazines and enjoying the quiet time to read them, and treating yourself to a nice dinner – perfect while watching a movie at home – which YOU get to choose. Check out her list.
What to Wear for a Cozy Valentine Date Night at Home? Lounging Pajamas!
And why not? Lounging pajamas like these are always a good idea. Perfect for changing into after dinner, when it’s time to watch a movie. And what could be better than chocolates – leftover from the holidays, to nibble on while watching that flick. And speaking of watching flicks – romantic ones at that, Elena Nicolaou from Oprah Magazine has put together a list of 35 of the Most Irresistible Romantic Movies to Watch Now. It’s a fab list, with something for everyone – I guarantee it.
What’s that? You’re wondering what I’m actually wearing for dinner? Not really sure, but maybe something like this:
Valentine Date Night at Home Dinner Outfit
Even though we’ll be at home, I still like to get a little dressed in something besides a t-shirt. I think it shows I made an effort, don’t you? I mean, as I said, we’ll be married four years this March, and maybe by the time we’ve been married twenty years, I’ll go straight to the lounging pajamas (nahhh), but for now, I still like to spruce myself up for hubs. My blouse from Zara is from last year, but there are plenty of red shirts still available for Valentine’s Eve, and the faux fur vest is an old Betsy Johnson. How cute is the leopard lining? Of course, everyone and their mom owns a pair of Spanx faux leather leggings!
My Own Sunny Valentine
This will be my fifth Valentine’s Day with my one true Valentine. We’ll be married four years this coming March. And yes, we’ll be home. Maybe bring in some stone crabs or grill steaks, but as always, there’s no place I’d rather be on Valentine’s Eve (or any night) than at home with my wonderful hubby.
Whatever you decide to do this Valentine’s Day and/or Eve, I hope it’s filled with love, laughter, and delicious food. And again, if you’re solo, enjoy your alone time. Take that bath, choose your own movie, and enjoy a delish dinner. Then, here it comes… Why not go shopping from the comfort of your own couch?!? Here are some of my favorites from Shopping with Gigi, and with every order, you might find an extra little gift in your package, as my way of saying thank you!
Want to See What Some of My Fabulous Friends are Doing and Wearing for Their Date Nights?
Nina – Sharing a Journey – Wondering what to do for Valentine’s Day this year? I’ve got you covered with a two-part series! Last Friday, I created a whole post about what to do for Valentine’s Day 2021, and today I’m sharing some great outfits to go with a variety of possible dates!
Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits – A date night outfit to wear at home has to be comfortable and cozy, yet pretty and romantic at the same time. This black floral kimono was a gift to me from my husband. I love to wear it on our home date nights with a romantic camisole. I completed the “Comfy & Cozy” requirement with a pair of soft joggers.
Nancy – Nancy’s Fashion Style – “For A date night at home, I let Gerben choose his favorite outfit on me! Can it be any more boring? In my eyes, I don’t even like black and white together. And although he said that I have a lot of beautiful dresses, he likes a black pencil skirt, a simple white blouse, and classic pumps. A few simple gold jewelry and, and that is what he likes the most, of course…..my black stockings! Oh, men…..”
Julie – Fashion Trends and Friends – Mr. FTF and I are pretty boring when it comes to at-home dates. We like keeping it simple. For us, a good time date night at home includes carryout (I don’t cook!), Netflix, maybe a bowl of popcorn or some type of dessert, and LAUGHS always lots of laughs! I’m usually dressed super casual – think sweatshirts and sweatpants (I do have the cutest Valentine’s set!)! However, since it is the week of LOVE, I’m sharing all of my Valentine’s looks – many can actually be worn year-round. By the way, we love to go out and do so at least once a week. Illinois is back open for indoor dining, so we have reservations at our favorite restaurant for Valentine’s Day! I hope you feel all the LOVE this week and have many reasons to LOVE BIG!
Andy – Pearls and Pantsuits – “The hubs and I enjoy date nights at home every Sunday night, and they rock for me because he usually does all the cooking! He also mixes up one heck of a cocktail. I found this beautiful rose top at Target, styled it with my favorite jeans and booties, added my Mom’s pearl necklace, and felt super fancy! Pop on over for all the deets on my outfit, and that cocktail recipe you are NOT going to want to miss!”
Nicole – High Latitude Style – “Date night means dancing for us. Then a sleek fit-and-flare dress is a Must. This dress has too much cleavage for my taste but works well for layering with a half-tee underneath. In Interior Alaska, date night can also be early in the morning. In winter, it’s dark until late in the morning (only 3.5 h of daylight at the winter solstice. And in the summer, there is daylight 24/7 for 84 days. More on Alaska lifestyle on the blog.
Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – This date night at home theme was announced just before my scheduled date night at home for our 11th wedding anniversary. While I had plans to dress up a bit for our special night, my hormones decided otherwise and slammed me with debilitating cramps all night long. And so I ended up spending our date night in my coziest things curled up on the couch!
But if I had been able to dress up, I would have worn this comfy black velvet pantsuit that is a recent thrift shop acquisition. I love the pants’ elastic waistband and wide legs, making them feel more like pajamas than dress pants. I layered a cowl neck sweater under the velvet cardigan and slipped my cold tootsies into some furry line rose gold mules. A simple tassel necklace and earrings in gold and rose gold completed my look. All set for date night 2021-style!
Suzanne – Ask Suzanne Bell – Like many moms, I don’t remember the last time I went out on Valentine’s Day with just my husband. But that doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate with a bottle of wine and usually steamed mussels for the 4 of us, and of course a yummy dessert! Jennafer Grace makes the most beautiful, old Hollywood style comfortable pieces – like this 2-piece shimmer set – perfect for lounging in style at home. Today I’m sharing how I style a few of my Jennafer Grace favorites, along with a recipe for my favorite cocktail. Cheers!
Emma – The Style Splash – “We don’t usually go out for Valentine’s Day – and we certainly won’t be this year – but I welcome the excuse to wear red! The rainbow striped sweater with the word “amour” on it (French for love, of course) seems very appropriate.”
Michele – On Instagram as Seechele_styles – “Wore this thrifted blue and white heart sweater to date night last weekend paired with my vintage Levi’s jeans and pop of red handbag and fun sneakers with red shoelaces.”
