When I found out I was becoming a grandmother for the third time, I was so happy. I’m absolutely thrilled about the grandmother experience. But there’s something beautifully ridiculous about being officially outnumbered by grandchildren who are winning the energy game by a landslide.
The Differences Between Being a Mother and Grandmother: A Reality Check
Understanding the grandmother role vs mother role has been eye-opening. Being a mother was like being the CEO of a very chaotic startup, making executive decisions about bedtimes, vegetables, and carpet stains. You’re the enforcer who says “Because I said so” on three hours of sleep. What it’s like being a grandmother is completely different, you’re the fun consultant who breaks all the rules and disappears before the sugar crash. When my kids were little, I said, “No cookies before dinner!” Now I’m sneaking extra cookies into tiny hands while whispering, “Don’t tell Mom.” The irony isn’t lost on me that I’ve become the person I used to roll my eyes at.
How Being a Grandmother is Different: The Sweet Spot of Grandmotherhood
Here’s grandmother advice nobody tells you: becoming a new grandmother is like getting a do-over with better perspective and less anxiety. When my children cried, I assumed I was doing everything wrong. When my grandchildren cry, I think, “Well, that’s what babies do. Bouncy chair or ride this wave together?” The stakes feel different in this grandmother experience. I’m not responsible for molding these little humans into functioning adults, that’s their parents’ job. I get to be the one who teaches them that waffles with extra syrup is perfectly acceptable breakfast food at Grandma’s house.
Third Time Grandmother Stories: What’s Different This Time Around
With my third grandchild on the way, I’m approaching this becoming a grandmother experience with zen-like calm that would have been impossible the first time around. The first grandchild? I researched every baby product and had strong opinions about organic cotton versus bamboo fiber. The second? I was still invested in having the “right” everything. This third time? Love and attention matter more than coordinated onesies. I’ve learned that understanding the grandmother role means being something different from a second mother. I’m the keeper of family stories, the photo-taker, and the person who thinks everything this baby does is genius, even drooling with exceptional technique.
Grandmother Tips: The Unexpected Joys of This Role
What catches me off guard every time is how being a grandmother has made me appreciate my own children differently. Watching them parent their babies, I see glimpses of the thoughtful, caring people they’ve become, and I think, “Hey, maybe I didn’t mess this up as badly as I thought.” There’s also something magical about being needed but not overwhelmed in this grandmother experience. When my grandchildren reach for me, it’s pure joy without the weight of complete responsibility. I get to be the safe harbor, the special treat, the one whose house has different rules and better snacks.
Looking Forward: Becoming a Grandmother for the Third Time
As I prepare to meet grandchild number three, I’m not worried about whether I’ll love them enough or differently. Love, I’ve learned, doesn’t divide, it multiplies in ways that would make mathematicians weep with joy. I’m excited to see what new personality will join our family circus. Will this one be the brainiac asking intelligent questions where you have to really think before you answer like Jack, grandchild number one? Or will this one be the exceptionally charming grandbaby who gives me one look and I give in like number two, Mia? Both of my first two grandkids are my daughter’s and they live 20 minutes south of me. Our third grandchild is my husband’s first biological grandchild and lives in New York! Well, he or she will when they are born any minute! We won’t see the baby as often so thank goodness for FaceTime! We will definitely be racking up the frequent flyer miles though, that’s for sure!
Upon reflection, what I know about the differences between being a mother and grandmother is that I’ll be there with open arms, a well-stocked cookie jar, and absolutely zero judgment about whatever parenting decisions their mom and dad make. Because that’s the beauty of understanding what it’s like being a grandmother, you get to love unconditionally without having to be the bad guy. And honestly? After raising kids when I thought I knew everything, there’s something wonderfully freeing about loving these little ones while knowing I still don’t know anything, and that’s perfectly okay. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go research the latest baby gadgets!
